Musical Notes

No celebration would be complete without music and this year the British Grand Prix is hosting special guests to get the party started on each night of the weekend-long event.

The first night, Thursday 5th July, is back to the eighties with a themed set by Sara Cox called ‘Just Can’t Get Enough of the Eighties’ and includes popular acts of the decade such as Go West and you’re certain to be Walking on Sunshine when Katrina, of Katrina and the Waves fame, appears live on stage!

Jo Whiley brings us the very best of the nineties with Indie Anthems on Friday 6th July and welcomes special guests Heather Small and – sure to be Good Enough – the band Dodgy.

The Saturday night, 7th July, is a noughties-themed treat hosted by none other than the Ministry of Sound supported by Brandon Block and Sonique to make you Feel So Good.

And what better way to round things off than Mel C spicing things up with her best-loved hits at the post-race British Grand Prix after party on Sunday 8th July?

Blast From the Past

As all Grand Prix fans know, there have been some truly memorable races at Silverstone over the years.

From the very first in 1948 when Luigi Villoresi and Alberto Ascari, who came first and second respectively despite arriving too late for official practice and having to start at the back of the grid, to that monumental battle in 1987 between team-mates Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet that saw the Englishman emerging victorious with his third win of the season after overtaking his fellow Williams-Honda driver with just three laps remaining, the British Grand Prix has been full of excitement.

To commemorate the mechanical achievements of the technical teams, the incredible performances of the drivers and the exhilarating action the Silverstone circuit has brought us during its 70 years, there will be a parade over the course of the weekend featuring the cars and drivers that have kept us enthralled throughout this time.

Classic Cars

The Maserati 4CLT/48 that Villoresi won the first British Grand Prix will make an appearance, along with the Lancia D50 that helped Juan Manuel Fangio take the 1956 title and of course the 1969-winning car, the Matra-Ford MS80 which will be driven by two-time victor, Sir Jackie Stewart himself.

These and a selection of other cars that have made the British Grand Prix so special will be displayed after the parade in the National Paddock, and passes are available to enter the area; there will also be a chance to talk to the mechanics who look after these mighty machines.

What an Atmosphere

It’s not just the driving that keeps Formula 1 fans entertained; the atmosphere and camaraderie make the British Grand Prix an event, not just a race and this is not confined to the paying audience.

In his second British Grand Prix victory in 1991, Nigel Mansell famously gave Ayrton Senna a lift back to the pits to after he had run out of fuel at Club.

And it would be difficult to forget the triumphant Lewis Hamilton crowd-surfing after his 2017 win, which saw him not only drawing level with F1 legends Jim Clark and Alain Prost, winning an astonishing five British Grand Prix titles but also setting a new record for the fastest official lap time of an incredible 1:30:621.

The flag for British sport is truly flying high this summer: the England football team secured their biggest-ever win at a World Cup Finals by beating Panama 6-1, and it looks highly likely that Lewis Hamilton will join the party by emerging as the winner of this year’s British Grand Prix if his seven-second lead in his commanding victory at the French Grand Prix is anything to go by.

There’s never been a better time to celebrate our sporting achievements, so why not get in on the action and make your journey to Silverstone’s 70th anniversary Grand Prix a special one? Our Mercedes S400 in metallic diamond white is the perfect choice to pay tribute to Hamilton’s performances in his AMG F1 W08 EQ Power+ equivalent.
